Street & Roller Hockey Sticks

Although many hockey stick manufacturers have begun producing sticks aimed specifically at street hockey and roller hockey players, many people continue to use standard ice hockey sticks, with wooden shafts and heavy blades.  Because of the rough surface, street hockey players often tape their blades to prevent excess wear.  For similar reasons, two-piece sticks are also common, as the aluminum shaft and removable plastic blades allow worn blades to be replaced frequently. Mylec blades, around $2.50 each, are a popular choice.

Some brands, however, do produce specific sticks for street and roller hockey.  The Bauer Street Hockey stick, for example, with an all-wood handle and poly-tech blade, is designed just for street use.  The Montreal brand has a combination street and ice hockey stick, with a hard graphite housing around the blade and lower part of the shaft to improve durability.  Although expensive, the stick is fairly common among street hockey players as it offers all the stiffness of a wooden blade but with additional strength.

Stick lengths vary based on the sport, as most street hockey sticks are designed to be used on foot, while ice and roller hockey sticks must be long enough to be used while on skates.  Players should generally choose a stick that comes up to their chin or nose level, however personal preference may vary.
